About UsStudent

The Reading and Writing Centre is an upgrading program offered by Vancouver Island University, Cowichan Campus, for adults wanting to improve their reading, writing, and math skills. The program is in a storefront in downtown Duncan, open since September 1999. We teach basic English and math along with computer skills, and we offer both group and individual instruction. At the Centre students take an active part in both their learning, and the running of the Centre.

How do students take part in running the Centre?

StudenstFrom the beginning, student decision-making power has been a key part of the centre. At the Monday morning meeting, students make decisions about many parts of the day-to-day running of the centre. They plan field trips and lunch programs. They decide when to take part in community events and when to invite people to centre events. This decision-making power is the basis of active learning.
